Hungarian reporter fired after deliberately tripping Syrian refugee

A Hungarian camerawomen was fired Tuesday for deliberately tripping a Syrian refugee, the local news channel N1TV, where she worked, said in a statement.
Petra Lazlo, who is a member of the anti-immigration group and a worker for N1TV station, was caught on camera sticking her leg out as a father carrying his son runs past, causing them both to fall down on the ground at the Roszke immigrant camp on the Hungary-Serbia border during a police crackdown on immigrants.
She was also caught on camera kicking refugees fleeing the camp, including a young girl.
“The N1TV colleagues today behaved unacceptably in Roszke collection point. Our working relationship with the camerawoman has ended. The case was considered closed our part,” The Telegraph newspaper quoted the news station as saying in a statement.
Lazlo’s video was widely shared on social media after it was posted by German reporter Stephan Richter on Twitter.
The migrants were part of a group of 1,500 people who had been waiting for hours at a refugee collection point near the Roszke crossing.

Tianjin Explosion: Blast In Warehouse Illegally Storing Chemicals, 2 Months After Deadly Disaster

Oct. 13, 2015

Tianjin was hit by a warehouse blast Monday night, just two months after explosions rocked the port city in northern China leaving over 160 people dead.
The incident took place at a warehouse storing "alcohol materials" in Beichen district's Xiditou Township, China’s official Xinhua News Agency reported, adding that there were no casualties. Nearly 6,600 pounds of alcohol were being stored in the 7,500 square-foot warehouse, the Associated Press reported, citing Tianjin government's news office.
Two people have been detained for illegally using the warehouse to store chemicals, China’s local network CCTV News reported, adding that an investigation is underway.

The Tianjin government also reportedly said the incident posed no hazardous risks to people or the environment.

In August, a warehouse complex storing large amounts of hazardous chemicals caught fire and exploded in Tianjin, 90 miles southeast of Beijing, killing 165 people and leaving eight missing. Last month, authorities announced they were ending search for the missing people and a court will issue death certificates for those unaccounted for.
Several arrests have been made in connection with the deadly Aug. 12 explosions at the Ruihai International Logistics warehouse. Investigations showed the warehouse stored at least 700 tons of sodium cyanide, which can form a toxic vapor when combined with water.
According to Chinese safety regulations, large warehouses of hazardous chemicals cannot be located within a kilometer, or 0.6 miles, of residential sites, public buildings or transportation lines. But the warehouse in Tianjin did not adhere to these standards, with at least three residential complexes built within a kilometer of the site.

Yangtze ship disaster: Chinese salvagers right Eastern Star

5 June, 2005
BBC

The Eastern Star overturned late on Monday after being caught in a storm.
Just 14 of the 456 passengers and crew are known to have survived what looks set to be China's worst shipping disaster in more than 60 years of Communist rule.
Authorities say the chances of finding anyone still alive were "slim".
"In a situation in which the overall judgment is that there is no chance of people being alive, we could start the work of righting the boat," Transport Ministry Spokesperson Xu Chengguang had told reporters at a news conference on Thursday.
Rescue workers on the upturned hull, which was just barely visible over the brown waters of the Yangtze, were towered over by two cranes.
Hooks were welded onto the ship and a net stretched around the entire structure in preparation for lifting it.
By first light on Friday, the ship could be seen lying on its side with its name visible just above the water. Xinhua state news agency later tweeted a picture of the righted vessel, its roof apparently crushed.
As the ship is righted, the focus of emergency workers at the site in Jianli, Hubei province will switch from attempting to find survivors to searching the ship's 150 cabins for bodies.
Mr Xu said on Friday that the next step was to raise the ship entirely above the water to conduct the search.
So far 97 bodies have been recovered, some after three holes were cut into the vessel's upturned hull. The holes were later welded closed in order to preserve the ship's buoyancy.
Mr Xu said there had been no further signs of life inside the ship, Xinhua news agency reports.
He said officials would "absolutely not cover up anything" in the investigation, state media reports.
Chinese President Xi Jinping promised a thorough investigation into the cause of the disaster, after angry relatives protested at the scene.
Authorities tightly controlled access to the site, leading family members and journalists to complain about a lack of information.

Most of the 14 people known to have survived jumped from the ship as it began to sink. Three were rescued by divers from air pockets in the upturned hull.
The cause of the sinking is not yet known, but survivors have spoken of an intense storm which flipped the boat over in minutes.
The captain and chief engineer, who were among those who escaped, have since been detained.
Maritime agency records showed the ship was investigated for safety violations two years ago. It was held alongside five other vessels in 2013 over safety concerns.
China's deadliest maritime disaster in recent decades was in November 1999, when the Dashun ferry caught fire and capsized in the sea off Shandong province, killing about 280.
The Eastern Star could become China's deadliest boat accident since the SS Kiangya sank off Shanghai in 1948, killing somewhere between 2,750 and 4,000 people.

Saudi Mers death toll passes 100

    BBC NEWS
The health ministry said another eight deaths occurred on Sunday, taking the toll to 102.
The acting health minister says three hospitals in Riyadh, Jeddah and Dammam have been designated specialist centres for treating Mers.
Mers causes symptoms including fever, pneumonia and kidney failure.
The rate of infections is increasing and the World Health Organization (WHO) has offered to help Saudi Arabia investigate infection patterns.
The Saudi health ministry reported the latest deaths in a statement late on Sunday.
Among the victims were a child in the capital, Riyadh, and three people in the western city of Jeddah.
The ministry said it had detected a total of 16 new cases of Mers (Middle East Respiratory Syndrome) over the past 24 hours.
Acting health minister Adel Fakieh said the three hospitals designated as specialist centres for Mers treatment can accommodate 146 patients in intensive care.
On Saturday, Egypt recorded its first case - a 27-year-old man who had recently returned from Saudi Arabia.
Correspondents say many Saudis have voiced concerns on social media about government handling of the outbreak.
Last Monday, Saudi health minister Abdullah al-Rabiah was sacked without explanation as the Mers death toll climbed.

Fifa corruption scandal: New arrests and charges likely following FBI involvement, Sepp Blatter deal being investigate

Tuesday 15 September 2015
The United States attorney general, Loretta Lynch, has promised more arrests at Fifa as her investigation into corruption has “now expanded” since executives of the world governing body were held in Zurich in May.
Her Swiss counterpart, Michael Lauber, said his separate investigation into criminal practices in the bidding process for the 2018 and 2022 World Cup had seized assets, including “apartments in the Swiss Alps”.
The two officials gave a joint press conference at the Baur au Lac hotel in Zurich, the same hotel where several of Fifa’s top executives were arrested in dawn raids almost four months ago.
Lynch said new charges and arrests against “individuals and entities” were anticipated. Asked whether Fifa’s outgoing president Sepp Blatter was wise to be avoiding travel to North America, as his  no-show at the Women’s World Cup final in Canada  in July was perceived, she said: “I’m not going to comment on individuals and I am not able to give you information about Mr Blatter’s travel plans.”
Lauber said his office was still in the process of going through some 11 terabytes of data seized from Fifa and other sources, and it was impossible to know how long it might take.
On the question raised at the weekend, over Blatter’s signing of a contract for the sale of 2010 and 2014 World Cup TV rights to the disgraced Caribbean football executive Jack Warner for around £400,000, which were then sold on for £11m, Lauber said: “This specific case we received on Sunday and it will be analysed by us to see if this is really valuable or not.”
On that case, Mark Pieth, a Swiss legal expert once hired by Fifa to advise on anti-corruption, said: “Blatter has to defend himself against a form of embezzlement charges. They have prima facie evidence. That means they have to open an investigation.”

Hundreds of migrants feared dead in Mediterranean sinking

A boat packed with up to 700 migrants capsized in the Mediterranean Sea off the coast of Libya with hundreds feared dead, officials and aid agencies have said.
An Italian Coast Guard spokesman said first reports indicated there were between 400 and 600 people on board, and that 25 bodies had been recovered so far.
UN refugee agency UNHCR said about 400 people had been rescued and 25 bodies had been recovered so far, although it is still not clear exactly how many people were on board.
UNHCR spokesman Federico Fossi said as many as 100 people may have been in the hull when the steel boat capsized as rescue ships approached it.
Médecins sans Frontiéres, whose rescue ship Dignity 1 was in the area, said in a tweet that the boat was believed to have been carrying about 700 people.
"The team on the Dignity 1 can confirm that there have tragically been many deaths but does not have figures at this stage," one of its tweets said.
One of the youngest migrants rescued was a one-year-old girl from Palestine. MSF said she was under water when her father pulled her to safety.
An Italian coastguard spokesman said an overcrowded boat had overturned off the Libyan coast just as ships came to its rescue but had no further details.
The operation, which also includes Italian vessels and Irish naval vessel Niamh, is continuing, he said.
The Defence Forces said in a statement that LÉ Niamh arrived to assist the fishing vessel at 11.45am Irish time.
It said the vessel immediately capsized shortly after the deployment of two ribs.
Minster for Defence Simon Coveney said there has been a tragedy on a big scale and the loss of life is likely to be significant.
Mr Coveney said: "At 8am Irish time, the LÉ Niamh was tasked by the Italian Marine Rescue Co-Ordination Centre (MRCC) to come to the assistance of a fishing vessel north-west of Tripoli, which was in distress with an estimated 600 persons on board."
The Mediterranean Sea is the world's most deadly border area for migrants. More than 2,000 migrants and refugees have died so far this year in attempts to reach Europe by boat, compared with 3,279 deaths during the whole of last year, the International Organisation for Migration said yesterday.
In April, a fishing boat with up to 800 migrants sank, making it the deadliest shipwreck in the Mediterranean for decades and a symbol of Europe's long-running migrant crisis.
The 20m vessel capsized as it approached a merchant ship that had come to its assistance.
